Volleyball: Canyon’s Malone named E-N Player of the Week

Kyla Malone, New Braunfels Canyon:
senior, outside hitter — Malone led the Cougarettes to a 2-0 record last week against tough District 26-5A opponents, Dripping Springs and Alamo Heights, with 43 kills.

Malone, who is committed to Incarnate Word, posted 17 kills and 11 digs against Dripping Springs. She surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark in that match.

In a four-set victory over Alamo Heights, Malone had 26 kills.

Malone connected well with sophomore setting Megan Hawkins, who logged 32 assists against Dripping Springs and 52 assists against Alamo Heights.

The Cougarettes are tied for first in 26-5A with Kerrville Tivy.

Game balls

 Antonian’s Olivia Arredondo had 52 assists in the Apaches’ five-set victory over Smithson Valley.

 Stevens’ Mia Francis had 40 kills in a five-set loss against Warren and 18 kills in a three-set loss against Harlan.

 Comfort’s Seigel Fritze recorded a school record 45 digs in the Deer’s five-set win against Stockdale.

 Steele’s Kitana Tuufuli combined for 29 kills, 28 digs and three blocks in victories over Boerne Champion and Brennan.

 Alamo Heights’ Hannah Whittingstall had 23 kills and six digs in the Mules’ four-set loss to New Braunfels Canyon.
